stroker 383 clearance 101

I have a 383 stroker going together for a client and I thought I would have a few minutes to get some pictures of where y'all need to clearance these motors. I hear more and more than everyday of people asking for small base of operations circle cams ( apartment tappets) considering they are not wanting to clearance their rods or may just want to experience like they accept a little actress insurance from possible danger. First of all pocket-size base of operations circle cams is a term that the true meaning varies from cam profile to cam profile. A college lift cam is naturally going to accept a smaller base of operations circle than a lower lift cam anyhow. But reducing the base circle more than is necessary simply makes life harder on the lifter and cam lobe. So I want to show first of all just how much need to exist ground off of the shoulder of these Hawkeye SIR rods to be able to utilise a std base circumvolve cam . This engine is using a hyd roller cam and it clears with flying colors.

look at the very corner how it has been machined off at an bending. That is all yous need to remove off the rod to clear pretty much whatever cam with a 3.75 stroke crank. Don't permit a lazy engine builder or machinist talk you lot out of doing this and send you down the minor base circle road. <Note> If y'all are using a Solid roller cam with a lower elevator and then yous will need to go with a .900 base circle cam. Merely most any solid or hyd flat tappet and hyd roller profiles volition be fine with the rods profiled this way. Adjacent is a photograph of a block equally stock without clearancing for the rod bolt in a stroker application.

you can see where the factory notch is bandage in the block for the rod bolt to clear equally the crank rotates. When you install the 3.75 stroke crank in a block cast for a 3.48 you volition demand to check this area. Not all blocks will demand to be clearanced ,I accept had some totate thru without touching it. To speed things alog when checking this clearance I put the bod bolt in the rod without the rod cap . I measure out the thickness of the cap ( in this case information technology was i.750) and I thread the bolt in the rod till the underside measures i.750. This way I can bank check the clearance I need without having to hassel with putting the rod cap on and taking information technology back off. It really speeds things upwards. I double cheque the measurement of the commodities from time to time but It unremarkably doesnt motion equally long as your conscientious. Heres a pix of what it looks like when Im checking. < notation I have already clearanced the block before I took this shot.

Equally yous tin tell it pretty easy to check this, and you dont accept to install the cap just to check it , simply take the commodities measurement and prepare it there. This is what the block looks like afterwards it has been clearanced.

I used a dice grinder and a carbide burr oval shaped to practise this clearancing. You but desire to take out enough to give yourself about .060" clearance, don't get carried away doing this because afterwards you have enough clearance, more than is not going to help a bit, you'r just chancing large trouble if yous grind as well much and become into the water. Like I said, this engine is using a Hyd roller cam, which brings me to some other subject field. The cam cadre you want in any application that uses a barracks steel cam is the everwear core. It is a steel billet cam and has a unlike distributer gear fabricated to it. It has several advantages. First of all yous exercise not have to run a Bronze gear on your distributer. BIG PLUS Here ! Bronze distributer gears wear and fill your oil pan with Bronze metal to become pumped thru your engine and embedded in your bearings. Second plus is the everwear gear is very concentric to the centerline of the cam. Billet cams without this are cutting for the distributer gears before rut treating, which volition take alot of runout afterward estrus treating, this run out also creates gear habiliment. This cam is a Reed Cam of fibroid, which offers the everwear core in any application where it is made equally their standard core. Don't settle for anything less in a billet core than this gear feature.

I hope this helps some people who are considering building i of these engines. They are alot of fun and brand swell ability. They volition live a long time if you accept the time to get these clearances right. :)

Doechsle, very expert information, great pics also..
Just one question,,on the rod, wont the bolt beetle farther than the expanse yous have footing?? Practise those rod bolts come up from the lesser? no nut ?
thanks once again for puttin up first-class information..

These rods apply bolts that thread into the rod, so it does non apply nuts. The rod bolt is threaded into the rod and measured and so information technology is out the exact amount it will exist with the rod cap in place. I measured the cap and information technology was 1.750". So when I screwd in the bolt I left the bolt out that same amount from the underside to the parting line. It works.:)

Yea, I understand how your doin the math just, can you employ standard stock blazon (bolt in from the summit/nut on bottom)rods?
Hulk

yes y'all tin can, only measure out the thickness of the rod cap and so thread the nut on the bolt till the gap between the rod and the nut measure the same thickness of the lower rod cap.
  • #6
I've heard and read that the clearance off the pinnacle of the rod bolt only needs to be done on certain rods?? #3 & #5, IIRC.

Is this true? or should information technology just be washed on all of them just to exist rubber?

  • #7
Information technology is truthful that only a few rods will hit the cam, merely do them all for balance issues on the rods.
  • #eight
My Eagle SIR rods did not articulate my cam even though the machine shop told me "yous shouldn't have any bug". I wish I had kept some notes and so I could tell yous which two rods I had problems with - Anyway I had to remove two piston/rods and clearance and reinstall them. Rotating associates was already balanced so I just take to live with it. And so far so good.

The corporeality of clearance I had to make on the rod corners did not interfere with the capscrew.

Im going to be using the scat rods, that are profile clearanced for strokers, so far anybody says they are great.
